Illa Fabulis

Illa Fabulis is a web project documenting the amazing lives, opinions and creative works of inspirational Canadian women. The goal of the project is to feature a variety of women, both well-known and up-and-coming, with an aim to highlight their accomplishments and document their unique stories. Interviews and portraits are housed on illafabulis.com and the Illa Fabulis monthly podcast features selections from the previous month’s interviews mixed with related music, readings and performances.

Sarah Maitland & Jen MacLeod • Two phenomenal women who run the Vancouver Writers’ Exchange—a non-profit organization that creates exciting literacy and publishing projects for at-risk and inner city kids.

Sophie Hackett • The AGO’s assistant photography curator talks about the art of photography, the film/digital debate and the history of women and the medium.

Elizabeth Bachinsky • An insightful and humorous chat with this lovely Canadian poet about her creative process and her most recent book of poems.

Azamit • A much sought-after Montreal stylist, Azamit is also the founder of the Souk @ SAT and Stylist’s Own.

Hillary Sampliner• At only 25 years old, Hillary’s career as a fashion designer is already well under way in Toronto. Next stop: Amsterdam.

Jesse Crowe • Originally from Saskatoon, Jesse has put roots down in Toronto. She’s one half of the shoegaze band Beliefs and a creative artist in many other realms as well.

Roseanne Harvey • Roseanne grew up in B.C. and moved to Montreal when she became the editor of the former Ascent Magazine. She now runs the popular yoga blog It’s All Yoga Baby.

This month’s episode features highlights from the first four Illa Fabulis interviews:

Lara Kramer • An independent choreographer and dancer based in Montreal. Her contemporary piece Fragments was inspired by her mother’s experiences in the residential schools.

Oh My Darling • Vanessa Kuzina, Rosalyn Dennett are two of the members of  one of the hardest working all-female bands in Canada today.

Madeleine Thien • Award winning author of three books of fiction. Her first book, Simple Recipes, is a touching collection of short stories. She also wrote two critically acclaimed novels, Certainty and Dogs at the Perimeter.

Jess Salomon • Jess used to work in The Hague as a war crimes tribunal lawyer before returning to Montreal to take the leap into comedy.
